The 4 Depth Levels Of Relationship Conversations

Vertical questions allow us to turn small talk into a deep conversation. For every honest conversation we have, we want to poke around with basic questions to get an idea for topics you and the other person would find interesting enough to have in-depth discussions. The biggest myth about small talk is that it’s binary—you’re either making small talk or you’re in a deep conversation. But just because the first three levels involve a somewhat superficial interaction doesn’t mean you should go out of your way to add more depth to the conversation. This is the level at which you can have a conversation with almost anyone. You’re neither sharing anything important nor expecting a meaningful response from the other person.

Sometimes it takes several exchanges before you and the other person feel comfortable enough to share your thoughts and opinions. Whenever you ask deep or personal questions, share something about yourself too. If you ask a series of questions without revealing anything personal in return, the other person may feel as though you are interrogating them. When Cynthia shared this progression during a workshop, I nodded and thought, “Yes, just what I’ve been looking for!

If your platform uses that disclosure for ad targeting, training data, or any commercial purpose without explicit consent, you are operating in a different ethical bracket from the discloser’s expectation. The Cambridge Analytica scandal was a textbook case of this mismatch — disclosures made at one depth were used in ways that violated the disclosure’s implicit social contract. Most surveys, most “tell us about yourself” onboarding flows, most data-collection forms violate this rule. The discloser receives nothing of equivalent depth back.

At a dinner party, gathering, cookout, or other social event, it’s nice to mingle and converse. For those moments, you can get a group or individual talking in no time with the help of these prompts. Many people also underestimate how much strangers care, leading to a reluctance to engage. However, these conversations can be more rewarding than expected, resulting in greater feelings of connectedness and happiness. After all, every human being has dreams to follow, fears, hopes, and regrets.

Why We Need To Have Deeper Conversations

Designers building international community platforms cannot assume the U.S.-undergraduate disclosure curves will translate. Wheeler, Reis, and Bond (1989) had university students in Hong Kong and the United States log every social interaction for two weeks. The Hong Kong students had about half as many interactions, with fewer people, but those interactions were longer, more often in groups or around a task, and higher in both self-disclosure and the partner’s disclosure. Development moves through stages, from orientation through exploratory and full affective exchange to stable exchange, with depenetration as the dissolution path that keeps breadth while losing depth.

When people sense that you are truly paying attention, they dare to open up. As a result, your conversations become more meaningful. The interaction registers as extractive, even if the user cannot articulate why. According to Brené Brown, vulnerability is the key to building trust and deep connections. When we show up authentically, we give others permission to do the same, fostering an environment of openness and mutual respect (Brown, 2010). And it helps to have a few tricks up your sleeve that will maximise the chances of small talk with a weak tie developing into something more. Sandstrom is interested in the power of conversation with what the American sociologist Mark Granovetter in 1973 called the ‘weak ties’ in our lives. In other words, it’s worth tolerating a bit of small talk because it lays the foundations for something richer.

But if you don’t sync with their vibe and pace, it’s not going to be a very enjoyable interaction. And if you’re not aware of the room, you’ll step on random people’s feet. Just because you want to go deeper doesn’t mean that that’s what the other person desires in that moment. Some people need some time to get in the mood, or may not be interested in connecting with you at that time at all. If you want deeper conversations, getting really good at level 5 (and reading how people receive it when you invite them there) is the shortcut. Still, that doesn’t make it impossible for such communication to spark a connection.

A relationship becomes more intimate when more and more varied subjects become open to discussion. The second aspect is depth, which refers to how deeply a person is willing to explore certain topics. In one example, a person may be willing to tell someone their favorite films, but may not initially be comfortable discussing details of their emotional reactions to those films. If the other person reciprocates and shares their own favorites, or if other factors cause the two to grow closer, a deeper discussion of their emotions and histories surrounding films may then become appropriate. Researchers believe that self-disclosing to others both in breadth and depth leads to more intimate interpersonal relationships. Additionally, deeper communication can significantly impact our mental and emotional well-being.

We had intimate knowledge of every other human in our environment. This is the level many people find themselves in when they are in a new group, still figuring out who they might like (or who might like them).

You and your friend are calmly sitting, listening to the rhythm of the oceans waves. Each crash invokes a thought in your head, but you’re careful on how to phrase it, for the silences have grown bigger. Not from lack of urge, but from deeper rooted thoughts. theamoredate.com/

The audit usually surfaces a gap at affective exchange — the stage where strong relationships consolidate. Be willing to share your genuine thoughts and feelings even when it’s uncomfortable. That includes sharing your authentic emotions and experiences, including elements about yourself that help others get to know you better.

  • ”—or by sharing how they see things differently without acknowledging the original speaker’s ideas.
  • Is it a real entity, or just a construction of our mind to convince ourselves of a higher existence?
  • When appropriate, sharing in a vulnerable way can create a sense of mutual understanding and connection.

Both of these things can be especially nourishing for people, as they are not that common in daily interactions. This the level most people talk about when they mention having had a “deep conversation”. From now on, each time we learn about a next level of conversational depth, I’ll give you clear examples how.

In study after study, both initiators and recipients of brief genuine connection reported more positive experiences than they anticipated. “Social Penetration Theory – Bringing People Closer Together.” Communication Theory, /social-penetration-theory-bringing-people-closer-together/. Don’t forget to lead with vulnerability so people know they don’t need to be perfect around you as this creates trust. Sometimes, however, it doesn’t matter if you ask all the right questions and do all the right things. This is why it’s important to lead a conversation by being vulnerable yourself. Vulnerability can be scary, so by going first, you allow the other person to be comfortable being vulnerable.

The next stage is the exploratory affective stage, where people disclose their feelings about topics like their favorite foods or movies. Deeper communication involves going beyond surface-level interactions and engaging in conversations that foster trust, understanding, and connection in all relationships. It’s about being present, listening actively, and sharing authentically. The objective is always to learn about and understand the other person in a deeper, more meaningful way. Whether in developing deeper personal relationships or fostering effective team dynamics in a workplace, recognizing and applying these stages can lead to more meaningful and productive connections.
